Description Cold forming of metallic structures will be the subject of this project. In particular three point bending to shape beams to a precise specific geometry will be investigated by numerical and experimental methods on simple representative structures. This project will involve simulating the bending process using the finite element method. Materials of interest are aluminium alloys and several grades of steel. This project will either generate new data experimentally or use previously obtained data with additional analysis. Effects of material plasticity model used on the accuracy of the results will be part of the investigation. The project can also investigate the effect of creep at low temperatures. Key Objectives Literature review on cold forming of materials.Development of a sample geometry and manufacture plan.Selection of a material and identifying material properties experimentally or via literature.Perform FEA analysis and experimental studies on small beams.Develop larger scale beam models with complex shape using multiple bending operations.
