Assessment of Global and Local Ductile Failure in Pressure Vessel Design - DM10

Description The ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code Section VIII Division 2 provides procedures for design against global and local plastic failure modes. These require the designer to perform an appropriate stress analysis and assess the results according to Code requirements. Alternative design routes based on elastic and elastic-plastic analysis are provided. This project will focus on the inelastic design approach using the ANSYS FEA program. A significant aspect of the project will be to develop and validate an ANSYS Parametric Design Language (APDL) macro for automatic calculation and display of required design parameters for this failure mode. The project is suitable for a student interested in pressure vessel design, structural integrity assessment, advanced FEA and computer programming. Key Objectives The key objectives of the project are to: Research/review the context, background and basis of Global and Local Ductile Failure checks. Develop and implement an ANSYS APDL macro for automatic evaluation and graphical display of local failure criterion results. Investigate local and global failure through parametric analysis of benchmark problems.
