Investigation of Compressed Air Energy Storage Systems - WD0001 - WD6

Description Accumulators are used in hydraulic systems to act as a passive pressure regulator and dampen out pressure fluctuations. However, when the hydraulic system is designed to generate pressure pulse the accumulator specification and design becomes more challenging. In this project we will invetigate the transient response of an accumulator by developing a thermodynamic model of the system and investigate how it responds to different dynamic inputs. Of particular interest is how to match the accumulator design to diffferent dynamics of the overall hydraulic system Key Objectives The objectives would be specific to the project but could involve some or all of the following (i) Review of accumulator modelling (ii) Development of zero dimensional model for an accumulator (iii) Development of appropriate heat transfer models for wall heat transfer (iv) determination of key design and operational parameters.
