Description Blowdown assist saftey valves are an advanced design of safety valve where the build up of pressure in the valve body, which occurs during the normal operation of the valve is used purposeully to encouage the positive closure of the valve. To design such a valve , mathermatical models require to be developed which will use a combination of CFD based approaches and classical thermodynamic system modelling techniques. The system modelling generates a number of ordinary differential equations and will use mathematical software such as Matlab to develop the model. CFD approaches will generally use ANSYS Fluent. The project can accommodate two students who need to be comforatble with learning and using either matlab or CFD techniques. Key Objectives Project 1- Develop a mathematical model to represent the dynamics of a blowdown assist valve and apply it to the design and modification of a standard safety valve. Project 2- Develop 2D CFD models for a blowdown assist safety valve and use the models to investigate design approaches to the valve design.
