Description In order to produce a fully sustainable composites for future applications, ideally the constituents of the composites should be from renewable sources. Therefore, natural fibres will be used in this project as a reinforcement for a natural polymer such as chitosan. Chitosan is chemically derived from chitin which is the second abundant materials after cellulose. Chitin is commonly extracted from shellfish wastes. The challenge is that neither chitin or chitosan can be melt processed into composites. Consequently, a new technique will be developed in this project to manufacture fibre-reinforced chitosan composites. Key Objectives To develop a method for manufacturing chitosan-based compositesTo explore the mechanical, physical, thermal and structural properties of the produced composites
